Get hot and heavy this Halloween! Entry #1 in the H-ERO series, The Maverick Manor is an urban-fantasy short narrative RPG about two Undead Monstergirl special agents. Tasked with investigating a massive pulse of magic at a remote mansion on Halloween, Agents De-Animator - the half-Zombified scientist Helen East - and Unlucky 13 - the towering Revenant amazon Jaycie - find themselves whisked away to a manor-turned-madhouse! Displaced and corrupted by the whims of an arrogant Succubus, the separated Agents must fight for their freedom, regroup, and kick some Demonic ass! For if they don't, then it's their asses on the line! ♥

Known Issues:
- None for 1.1.01 at time of writing.
1.1.01 Fixes
- If you game over'd and restarted in the focus-draining wine cellar puzzle, you lost the key required to do the puzzle. This has been fixed.
- Upon retrying the final boss, sometimes her 'Curse' mechanic would be stuck at its prior turn count, leading to immediate 1-shots. It should hard-reset now on a retry.
- The 'Ero' menu can, under rare instances, act as though a 'forbidden' tagged kink is detected and cause a divert to the summary instead of the scene. This should be fixed now.
- Under very rare instances, the game will fail to load offline background assets and fall back to online testing assets for the Backgrounds, specifically. As the file host is currently blocking UK residents, these assets have been moved.
- Due to an oversight while fixing an inventory bug last-minute, the 'Mildly Evil Knife' item does not work for Jaycie. Fixed.
1.1
- MAJOR COMBAT SYSTEM OVERHAUL!
- The combat UI has been totally overhauled, allowing for more information to be displayed per-turn about the protagonist and opponent's respective actions. New bars exist for tracking status effects, for displaying fight-specific context and flavour, and hotkey'd menu buttons that dynamically disabled and enable based on fight situation and status effects are mapped to 1-8 on keyboards (top or numpad).
- Status Effects have been completely reworked into the new 'Deadline' system. When a status effect is applied, many of them now have set durations; the Deadline. Many status effects will get worse the longer they last, and if they hit their Deadline, a substantial penalty is inflicted as the effect is purged (or possibly gets worse!).
- It's not all doom and gloom, however! If the protagonist is afflicted with a debuff/status effect, the Defend action transforms into Defend & Triage; with all the existing benefits of Defend, it now also purges most negative status effects, and decreases the progress of some more powerful ones.
- And don't go worrying about your precious turn economy against the enemy; they're part of this system too. The more effects are stacked on an enemy, the more their status stress rises. If it bypasses an enemy's tolerance - determined by their intelligence and personality - then they will be driven to skip their turn to defend and purge too.
- Mass-applying Status Effects will often prevent them from hitting their Deadlines and thus their max potential, but can force the enemy to lose turns dealing with them. Vice versa, as the player, it's up to you to decide just how far you can push your status effect(s) before the situation becomes untenable!
- Along with your chance to hit an enemy, you are told your chance to inflict a Status Effect on that enemy (which varies by the power of the effect and that enemy's resistances).
- Major Kink Tagging Overhaul
- Scenes are now properly databased and a masterlist of kinks and other tags exists. This means that the Kink Filtering page under Settings has been drastically overhauled.
- The original concept of 'Allow, Warn, Forbid' remains, but now it applies to a substantially higher number of tags.
- If a tag appears in that menu, it means it appears in the game - the number next to it will indicate how many total scenes contain this tag.
- The new menu is significantly more compact. Hovering over a tag by name will explain what it means.
- H•ERO's Codex (1.0) is now available! Featuring an all-new Codex system with a history function and 'See Also' entries!
- It is considerably larger than MERCANOID's introductory Codex for The Glowing World, weighing in at roughly 130k words. Enjoy learning about H•ERO and all its oddities!
- New lewds!
- Cameo characters of Supporters can be found throughout the game in lewd little scenarios!
- A massive bonus scene (over 10k words) can be found in the Library!
- An optional extension to Amy's bad end is now available!
- The game now has a proper Credits popup screen, available in the top left. This lists authors of contributing software/macros, creators of art assets, and my Supporters!
1.0.8
- It was still possible to move during a conversation cutscene after the Mandrakes fight, which would severely break the progression of the game. Fixed.
1.0.7
- Fixed the missing tag in the Kitchen description that was causing an error to appear. This was a messup of a fix in 1.0.6.
- Fixed the Mandrakes not properly directing to their bad end upon being defeated by them. Sorry!
- Fixed a whole bundle of mispellings.
1.0.6
- A multi-attack possibly made by Mandrakes would trigger their end-of-turn status checks twice, causing them to take two ticks of DoT, etc on one turn.
- When Helen takes the Winchester (if Jaycie sends it up), the icon now disappears for the sake of consistency with other item pickups.
- Upon restarting the final boss, some status effects would linger. This was thought to be fixed. It should now be definitely fixed.
1.0.5
- Void-access direction upstairs removed from bottom-center tile. Whoops.
- 'Back' was appearing in the new 'Ero' button version of the Fantasize menu. It shouldn't have been, and took you to some MERCANOID-specific menu options. Bypassed/fixed.
- Incredibly Evil Knife's attacks both referenced the character's Main weapon in flavour text, not the equipped subweapon. Fixed.
- Embrace Of Our Lady could be used constantly due to an oversight with how Cooldown items work. Fixed.
- During the final boss...
- On the first attempt, Jaycie's revival perk may not have worked. Fixed.
- Regen would carry on between attempts. Fixed.
- Charging states would carry on between attempts and break stuff. Fixed.
1.0.4
- A locked door upstairs was allowing entry. Fixed.
1.0.3
- Due to a problem with Twine's archival import system, when I moved the project from my laptop back to my main workstation upon arriving home, it failed to update and thus erased fixes made during the final pre-release version, 1.0, and 1.0.1. Those fixes have been restored. Sorry!
- A tile in the Makeshift Bar would allow access into THE VOID. Fixed.
1.0.2
- Fixed the 'Tentacle Pit' bad end's rewind function breaking if you attempted to use it after succumbing to the gas trap later.
- The game was still utilizing online assets for the Maps, specifically. This has been fixed to utilize the offline pathed assets instead.
- One such map was misnamed. It is now behaving.
- A few minor inventory UI bits that were irritating me have been smoothed over (superfluous +'s, flat totals after percentages looking weird, etc)
- Fixed an errant <<if>> tag from an abandoned piece of scripting in the Makeshift Bar (cleaning room door).
1.0.1
- Fixed the 'Cannot find a closing tag for <<capture>>' *2 bug in the Wine Cellar. For want of a /, the war was lost. Whoops!
I enjoyed Mercanoid, and this was an excellent follow-up. Although this is much shorter and more linear due to the GameJam-esque creation, the mechanics are solid and the H-scenes are even hotter than Mercanoid's. 10/10, no notes, waiting for the next one with 'bated breath.
got past the welcome mat (after surrendering...for science), went back to read prologue...game is too wordy by 40% easily. the prose isn't purple enough to warrant the lurid attention to detail, and there's lots of paragraphs that could have been adjectives. less is more, show don't tell. mechanics are solid, presentation is adequate, combat is fun, anything that isn't combat is fucking tedious
The Maverick Manor's story is short, but complete. The writing does what it sets out to well, and while I certainly wish there were more of the content I like most, it is easy to engage with the adult content that you like and filter the content you don't want to see. The game side of things is similarly well designed in that you don't need to lose to see the defeat content, so you get to just play to win and enjoy the loss if it happens at all.
Loved Mercanoid, and this is an improvement in many ways. Swapping to a variety of boss encounters fought with two characters feels more fun and modern than the old constant RPG random monster fight barrage, and it means that battles take more planning and careful reading to beat rather than just spamming attack and glow/flow moves. Great variety of scenes, cleverly written, and the new visual update is very impressive.
LOVE THIS! And i love the new UI update. Ive been a fan of Pyksies writing for over a year now and cant wait for new games to come out! All the scenes except the mandrake one are right up my alley, so if u like futa, tentacle, mimic(esque) you will like it aswell!
Loved the content from them before, been enjoying this so far! I hope to see more from Pyksies. I've enjoyed seeing them work with artists to support their projects as well, instead of yoinking others art for their HTML game or deciding to leave their HTML games bare with barely any visuals.
Pyksies releases another excellent text-based game stuffed with well-written prose as well as titillating and various erotic game overs centered around our protagonists being overcome by evil forces, putting marvelous emphasis on the corruption. It's a short but sweet horror-themed experience, well worth your time.
Can now say definitively that Pyksies is my favorite porn game writer/dev. More good queer games! I would really enjoy a trans/adjacent focused game for obvious reasons, but cant wait for more from her regardless, especially in this new universe.
The game design and characters are on-point and I'm a big fan of the world being built here, the concepts are good. But it's a text based game and the writing just isn't there yet. - Paragraphs longer than five lines are harder to read. More line breaks of simpler ideas would flow a lot better. 10 line paragraphs are gnarly. - The text constantly double-talks and doubles back over itself. "Her hand - or rather, her lips." It's emulating coy speech patterns , I get that, but it's called 'correcting yourself' because you got it wrong the first time, and I'd rather a lot more descriptive lines correctly described things the first time. Too much garnish, not enough steak. - Extremely guilty of trying to write 'how writers sound', when the truth is writers who can sound like this can talk like this naturally. If you can't nail talking like this in a casual manner, then it's like hearing an American attempt an Australian accent. Author, if you're reading this; your words and your ideas are good. If you put less effort into writing this at a line-by-line level, it'd take a lot less effort to read it and be way hotter and more enjoyable. I'm putting this as a 3, but I'm also going to be following this series. This feels like an inexperience problem, which means I'm excited to be giving a future installment a 5 one day.
I played their previous game MERCANOID, and while it takes place in a completely different setting with equally different characters, the quality hasn't dropped at all! In fact it seems to have improved! My only complaint (if it could be called that) is in the fact that it's much shorter than their previous title, though it makes sense seeing as how this is a Halloween special. about 1-3 hours of content, depending on if you read everything that is presented to you. 5/5!
