You play Sean Baskin, a man with no clear direction and no romantic life. Solena, who helped raise him and was his late father’s longtime partner, requires a bonded partner to secure her invitation to Tidewell, a secluded island wellness resort, so Sean agrees to act as her boyfriend. Their cover story as a loving couple becomes complicated on a remote island where passports are taken, privacy is limited, and strange rituals push them through increasingly sexual relationship-building tasks. This adult game mixes visual novel storytelling with match-3 play and dark-comedy tones, blending humor, romance, and voyeurism. It was created by Anya Merchant in Ren’Py, uses AI-generated 2D CG artwork and animated scenes, and adapts the author’s novel.
The current build is v1.0.0-rc.1, a complete story release candidate dated October 6, 2026, indicating ongoing development. It runs on Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android, is available in English, and is uncensored. The latest changelog notes all twenty-six chapters and the epilogue, refreshed backgrounds, portraits, continuity, wedding staging, music, and ambience from playtesting. It also added save/load, lowered flashing, separate audio controls, and optional Story Mode.

When Solena, his late father's longtime partner and the woman who helped raise him, needs a “bonded partner” to claim her invitation to Tidewell, an exclusive island wellness retreat, Sean agrees to pose as her boyfriend. The cover story is a couple in love. The reality is a remote island, surrendered passports, ridiculous couple's rites, and a severe lack of privacy. Escaping Tidewell means climbing its ranks, one increasingly sexual relationship building exercise at a time until Sean and Solena can no longer tell where the performance ends. Help! We Joined a Cult by Accident is an adult dark-comedy hybrid visual novel and match-3 game based on the novel of the same name by author/developer Anya Merchant. AI based tools were used for asset generation, coding, and converting the original book/script to Ren'Py.
